Think of this site as an empty canvas, open-mic and wall to grafitti. Though it has been given a big push to get past the talk of a site and was thrown together in a three week hurculean effort, its survival and growth depend on you.

What follows is not a chronicle of what was, but a forum for what IS. In a word, this site is about CONNECTION.

Connection to the past, yes, but also a bridge from that which was, which is and will be. And so in connecting past, to present, it is hoped you find motivation that moves you from memory and talk to momentum and manifestation.

Send your artwork, stories, prose, audio, video, memories, and SEND IT IN or at least let us know you have materials you will be scanning.

"Log-in" to this site here.

BIG THANKS go out to MargaretS, DonK for the new ambiant sounds and PaterG for the nifty new espressobar.org logo

Your comments and feedback about the site is greatly appreciated! If you like the site, let me know, if you've got suggestions, I'd love to know about it.

Vladamir in the Alley
at the Batchelder Fountain

by dk

Somehow, I had met this very unusual person, Michael Thornberry, through a mutual friend.Vladimir. Ordinarily, I would have been spooked by the powerful frailtie that Michael presents but, I had learned to trust my dear friend Vladimir. Michael spoke, in a dramatic undertone hinting to be hypnotic yet sencerely inviting.

"O.K., sounds Cool".

He suggested I bring one of my intsruments. At first, I think I brought a wooden recorder and maybe an Echo harp, because they were easy to conceal. Those and the mandolin. Heck, I was being encouraged, if not bartered in free Royals and cheesecake by the proprieter to play or meander, whenever, whatever I felt like in the midst of a handful (or less) of people who seemed not to care one way or the other. Too bad, and not too unlike Michael, my system was only able to tolerate caffiene and sugar in very small quantities. Perhaps, much of the inate irony of the Espresso Bar was born from this...this great, great, pastry  chef who was diabetic...who could not indulge in his own creations but certainly savored others doing so. (And, that may also explain the lethalness of his deserts.)

I remember riding my motorcycle down from Chaney Trail on some of those hot, windy, convectional nights, just to hang around. Things started taking off with the local hipsters making the scene, the Filmforum gang and Gosh magazine. It was mostly Terry Cannon's crew with a few artists, musicians and craftpeople who had lofts or basements on Raymond or Fair Oaks, apartments or bungalows, all within walking distance. At some point THE MYSTERY BARTENDER started. Half way through the night, someone, priorly selected, would take over, behind the bar, not knowing the first thing about tending a coffee bar. Some people excelled. Some people just stood there. All were wonderful. It was the time of the Pasadena Dada movement. The  Renaisance. It was  the real deal. Youth and art. Caffiene without fear. An anti-establishment that stayed open as long as you could stay awake. Michael, Vladimir.

I know where Vladimir is. Where is Michael?

ATTENTION

Do you know someone on the list to the left?
Email them and give them the address of the hompage! Here's the goal, get all the names from the watch list to the list to the right who have at least logged in. All you gotta do is show up to be a member. If you know anyone on the Watch list, email them, or better yet, give them a call and alert them of the presence of this bizarre webpage. At least they're going to want to know about all this conversation about them on the internet. Our goal is to move the above list to the list on the left of people who have at least logged in.

NAME POLICY
Expcept for the watch list, no full names will be posted unless you specifcally ask to use both or list yourself as such as an artist (or auteur). Indicate how you want to be listed. One or two letter abbreviation each.

I want to make an exclusive offer to all former E-Bar employees and patrons. After the E-Bar, where I put poetry on the menu, I went on to be the barker for the first National Poetry Slam, held in SF, and later I toured the U.S.A. & Europe numerous times as a spoken word performer with various musicians and bands, recording along the way.

Don Kirby aka Maurice Illinois aka Baba Ganoush is featured on a cut called
"Be Nowhere Now"

This was recorded at The Olde Town Pub, with Don Kirby where he played sitar against his own tanpoura track.

I will send my new CD "Caught in the Act" to anyone who sends me $5 via cash or check. Give me five, and I'll give you fifteen (tracks)!

Thanks,
